Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to offload part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

The deal estimates Mercedes at £4.6 billion – a record for a Formula 1 squad – after McLaren was appraised at £3.5bn in an adjustment to ownership structure in September.

The Austrian executive, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a stake approximately 5%.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Ownership Structure

The other shareholders in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos, who each also own a third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We are providing no official statement on this. The management structure of Mercedes F1 stays unchanged, and all three partners are dedicated to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Financial Increase

The deal would represent a substantial rise in value of the Mercedes team since Ineos Group acquired its stake for £208m in 2022.

This surge reflects the expansion in market values of Formula 1 outfits recently as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This was also seen in the success of the F1 movie featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and has grossed more than $630m (£458m) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing movie and the highest-earning sports film ever released.

Current Performance

The Mercedes team are second in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren, with three races left in the current championship.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a record eight straight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 to 2021.
