New York Launches Portal for Public to Submit Immigration Videos After Detentions of Four American Citizens

The state AG has introduced a recent online portal urging locals to submit photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement around New York. This step follows a shortly after a significant ICE raid rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, sparking large-scale protests.

American Citizens Detained In Raid

A congressional representative announced during a news conference that four citizens were taken into custody and detained for "about 24 hours" after Tuesday's raid. Rallies occurred in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"Every New Yorker deserves to live without fear," the attorney general stated in a release.

"Anyone who observed and captured immigration enforcement yesterday, I encourage you to provide that material with my office. We are committed to assessing these accounts and investigating any violations of law."

Form Details

The form offers spaces to submit images and video footage of the incident, as well as a field to note location information. Before submitting, submitters must tick a box that acknowledges that "the office may use any evidence provided in a legal proceeding, including in a court case or public report."

Information about the Chinatown Raid

The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say included over fifty federal agents, occurred in a well-known district of Manhattan where imitation purses, items, goods and other goods are commonly traded widely – often to sightseers.

Recordings of the operation depict numerous hooded and equipped personnel securing and holding a person, and pushing back onlookers. Masses of New Yorkers followed the agents through the streets. An armored military vehicle was observed moving along the Manhattan avenues.

Leadership Statements

In a Wednesday press conference organized with the New York immigrant rights coalition, Representative Goldman, a lawmaker, said that four nationals were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be detained for unjustly." He noted the citizens were released on the following day with no legal action taken.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not about removing offenders," the congressman stated. "This constitutes a military-style operation to incite tension. It is merely a justification to incite violence for this administration to utilize the military to stop violence that they have created."

Extensive Outcry

Fury over the ICE raid rapidly grew – each of the mayoral candidates denounced the raid, including Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Once again, the current administration selects oppressive displays that instill panic, rather than security. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate wrote.

The city's advocacy organizations voiced concern also.

"Federal officers targeted Chinatown in NYC with military-style vehicles, masked agents and tactical gear to focus on street vendors attempting to earn income. This action had no relation to community security and was entirely about intimidating residents and communities," said the president of a major immigrant coalition.

Agency Rules

ICE policy bans the holding of citizens and the bureau has said it refrains from apprehend American nationals. Yet, independent reporting has discovered that numerous US citizens have been detained unlawfully by immigration authorities since the beginning of the existing leadership.

Recent Pattern

ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in the state and nationwide this year.

A mid-October raid in central NYC was the first known raid on an refuge facility of the present government. Protests targeting immigration enforcement are commonplace as are allegations of violence and abusive practices.

Most recently, a submission filed by advocacy organizations alleged medical neglect of pregnant women in government custody.
