Balloons Employed to Contraband Cigarettes Closed Lithuanian Airport

Recovered contraband balloons
At least 11 of the meteorological balloons, carrying thousands of packs of illegal cigarettes, have since been recovered

Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.

Air Travel Interruptions

The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.

As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.

A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.

Cross-Border Effects

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.

Criminal Methodology

When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."

International Concerns

The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.

Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
