An Exercise in Passive-Aggressive Self-Defense

This football book is curiously dull, yet oddly compelling. Its title raises questions. Dear England currently names a hit theatrical production, an upcoming television program, and a public letter authored by the manager in 2021.

This version of Dear England isn’t officially connected to those. It stands as an oddity in the Dear England Multiverse, a book about guidance: a classically dull elite football manager subject that Southgate adheres to doggedly, relying on the words “leadership”, “leading” or “leadership” no fewer than 500 times across the book’s entirety.

Inquiries Explored

“What are leaders? What actions do leaders take? And what do leaders know?” Southgate inquires early on, setting out his stall, but declining to address “When are leaders?”, themes likely saved for a second book.

Additionally, this book contains a book-shaped hole at its core. It’s an attempt in passive-aggressive personal vindication, in nearly but not entirely stating the underlying truth, hopping skillfully from unresolved issue to raw emotion across a collection of pie charts, corporate platitudes and discussions about Thomas Cromwell.

Immersion

Reading it is like overhearing your family members having a controlled but deeply felt disagreement in the nearby area while you’re attempting to concentrate on a corporate presentation named “Countless Explanations for My Eventual Success”. But it is also impossible to disengage, as Southgate keeps approaching to something you actually want to learn about, before suddenly changing tack.

Insights

Readers will find always news headlines in works in this genre, explained by the rapt obsession with the role of England manager. The most striking examples are: he resolved he was absolutely going to quit as England manager after spectators threw containers at him at the tournament; he almost chose to abandoning the game at mid-match against the Bulgarian team in 2019 after his team were targeted with slurs; he pioneered the approach of dedicated restart experts and everyone in the top division is now following his lead; he has now lost his enthusiasm for football, a shocking admission casually mentioned in a single paragraph at the final part.

Guiding England through a time of fury, hope, upheaval and lockdown was a grueling experience. The wounds are obviously still unhealed.

Predictable Elements

Throughout much of the book, the narrative is flooded with an AI-style verbal clutter of commonplace management talk. Copies of this book were shared with reviewers under secrecy pacts prior to launch, presumably out of concern someone might reveal that “challenging discussions can, by their inherent quality, be tough”, that you should always consider the consequences, that leadership occurs where change meets understanding.

Genuine Feeling

The book contains nevertheless authentic feeling here. Guiding England through a era of fury, hope, political ferment and confinement was a harsh journey. The wounds are clearly still fresh, albeit expressed in a buzzword-filled reinterpretation of the standard coach story: demonstrating my accuracy about each issue from the start.

Detailed Instances

Even publication’s initial chapter, disguised as gripping memories of the championship match of Euro 2024, is completely dedicated to how effective Southgate in fact was at tactical substitutions (the major Southgate gripe revolving around he was not successful at making changes). Subsequently, he delves into great depth about how he managed the Euros final of 2021 flawlessly – particularly the failed spot-kick decider – because he complied with a established procedure, which suggests that throwing on inexperienced squad members at the last moment to take the most important shot of their lives was logical and right.

That approach was validated by a victorious shootout against Switzerland four years later after a match where England spent 120 minutes looking as if they were attempting to wear a pullover the inside out. “Our commanding performance in that tiebreaker was simply exhilarating,” Southgate states, while equating the performance to special forces neutralizing Osama bin Laden. Oh Gareth.

Missed Opportunities

When we do get close to a disclosure, Southgate retreats from specifying people or giving us the substance. We learn there were problematic England individuals who insisted on more attention, maybe because they were indulged early in their time in football. But as you lean forward expectantly, the author is quickly shifting into an area called a leadership concept, which states that rather than a collection of qualities or values, team environment is in fact an element that is formed by, gah, enough, no more.

Notable Sections

Within the more compelling parts are when he writes about the incremental method of building fortitude in the next generation, or how he attempted to articulate what it means to be English more clearly and more positively than any public personality in the spotlight. Best of all, there is a genuinely absorbing narrative of that distressing night in the Bulgarian capital where England’s black players were viciously abused (and later protected forcefully by their coach).

Sincere Finale

Maybe the most heartfelt part {comes|arrives|appears
